The conclusion of the latest Helldivers 2 Major Order has seen Meridia be destroyed and turned into a black hole, marking the first time the galaxy has been permanently changed. This is all set up to begin the story arc that will bring The Illuminate to the game, adding a much-needed third faction for Super Earth to fight. But, some players believe it isn’t a black hole that has been left, instead, it is a wormhole.

U/WeirdFurryIntoBDSM took to Reddit to share a theory that the new black hole created by Meridia’s destruction is a wormhole. This could be used for The Illuminate to travel through and return to the galaxy after having thought to be eradicated after the original Galactic War. They noticed that a few telltale signs of a black hole were missing, saying,

“That’s not a black hole guys…Where is the accretion disk? Where’s the photon ring? It’s way too big for the mass of the planet…Sweet liberty, I think we made something we shouldn’t have..”

U/DaMarkiM shared their thoughts and gave more insight about black holes saying,

“Well, as for the accretion disc: there wouldn’t be any. planets – per definition – have cleared their orbit. If a planet collapsed into a black hole an accretion disc wouldn’t magically appear out of nowhere. On stellar black holes these are made from the material ejected by the supernova or material sucked up from a binary partner. I think this also explains the lack of a photon disc. After all accretion is the primary light source for black holes.

The size of this is indeed too large for something created from a planetary mass. But then again we don’t know what dark fluid is. After all, it induced the gravitational collapse of a planet. Which means it must have overcome electron and neutron degeneracy pressure. Which might imply that dark fluid increases the gravitational force of objects.

In this case, the resulting black hole would also be bigger. You gotta remember the size of a black hole doesn’t have anything to do with the amount of stuff in the singularity. It only depends on the gravitational force. (ignoring spin)”

U/DangerNoodleJorm has an interesting theory that the black hole could lead to a second map in the game saying,

“We’ve all been assuming the illuminate will take the southern part of the map but what if this becomes a thing you can click through to a whole other map…”

Finally, U/Etzlo believes that it isn’t a black hole and is instead a wormhole saying,

“It 100% is a wormhole, Dark Fluid is negative mass, the thing that makes the math for a wormhole work.”

Whether it is a black hole or wormhole, Helldivers 2 has been shaken up in a way never seen before. With The Illuminate set to appear in the game soon, now is a great time to look at your loadout and see if it needs updating.
