May 2024 was a rough month to be a Helldivers 2 player, with the PSN controversy and weapon nerfs turning many players away from the game. Thankfully, the month has ended on a high note and it looks like June could be one of the best months ever as the recent black hole event is signalling the arrival of The Illuminate. The event helped to create a lot of buzz within the community and even brought quite a lot of players back to the game.
According to Steamdb, the Helldivers 2 player count saw a 30% increase following the completion of the Major Order that saw Meridia destroyed and turned into a black hole. The previous day saw the game peak at approximately 57,000 players, which jumped up to 80,000 when the black hole was added to the game.
Although the player count has dropped back down, it is a positive indicator that Arrowhead Game Studios is going in the right direction with bringing fresh story-based content to Helldivers 2. The black hole event is the beginning of the story arc that will bring The Illuminate to the game, which is sure to bring many players back as, despite Helldivers 2 being incredibly fun, it does get repetitive. The futuristic faction is sure to refresh the game and bring many of its players back as there will be new planets, missions, weapons, and strategies to learn.
