The playable races in Dark and Darker are:
- Human
- Elf
- Orc
- Lizardmen
- Lycan
- Skeleton
Any medieval fantasy setting wouldn’t really be complete without a whole host of different races, and Dark and Darker is no different. While originally only featuring humans, the developers have added several playable races into the game, each with their own pros and cons.
If you’re curious what races are in the game or are just looking for what variations to their stats there are, we’ve put together a quick guide to take you through each race in the game so you know exactly which one to pick for your build.
Dark and Darker races
At the time of writing there are a total of six races in Dark and Darker, though the developers are planning to have up to 13 in the future. The currently available races are:
- Human
- Elf
- Orc
- Lizardmen
- Lycan
- Skeleton
Aside from the Human, each race comes with a change to their stats, receiving at least one buff and at least one nerf. Here are all the changes for each race:
Race | Positives | Negatives |
---|---|---|
Human | N/A | N/A |
Elf | +1 Agility | -1 Stamina |
Orc | +1 Strength | -1 Agility |
Lizardmen | +20% Armor Rating+10% Headshot Damage Reduction | Headgear cannot be worn |
Lycan | +4 Vigor+10% Headshot Damage Reduction | Headgear cannot be worn |
Skeleton / Elite Skeleton | +10 Magic Resistance | -10 Armor Rating |
Because of the differences between each race, you might want to consider choosing a specific one to match the playstle you’re going for. Humans are a good all-round race to choose so can go for any build. In contrast, the extra Strength of an Orc might make them ideal for a melee build, while an Elf’s Agility might be better suited for long-range combat.
How to unlock races in Dark and Darker
You can buy races from the in-game store using either Bluestone Shards or Redstone Shards. Bluestone Shards are earned by levelling up in-game, and can be used to buy at least one variant of each of the races. The only skins you can’t buy with this are the second and third Lycan skins which require Redstone Shards, and the base Skeleton skin which requires having purchased the Founder’s Edition
The easiest way to unlock these races is simply to purchase Redstone Shards. This will cost you a minimum of $8.00 to purchase the four Redstone Shards required to purchase an Orc, Elf or Lizardmen skin, while you’ll need to spend $10 to get the five shards needed for a Lycan skin. The only exceptions are the Skeleton for the reasons stated above, and the Elite Skeleton which can only be purchased with six Bluestone Shards.
